Virginia VINE and Powhatan Releases
Virginia Jail VINE is the notification service for local and regional jails in the Commonwealth. For a person arrested in Powhatan County, that means searching the feed tied to Pamunkey Regional Jail, not looking for a stand-alone Powhatan jail. Pamunkey says it houses people for Powhatan and participates in VINE. Its official notification page provides both the web route and the telephone service at 800-467-4943. The service is free and centers on a named person and a current custody episode.
The local service reports custody events such as release, transfer, death, and escape or return. Some facilities may report optional events, but Pamunkey does not promise every possible notice or an advance-release alert. A VINE release notice means the reporting local-jail episode ended. It does not by itself rule out a transfer, another agency hold, or later supervision. The jail record and court order remain the best proof of what happened and why.

Search a Powhatan County Inmate
Start with the Virginia VINELink portal. A name search can produce several people, so the first plausible result is not enough. Compare the available identifiers and make sure the facility aligns with Pamunkey. An inmate or offender number is stronger than a charge description. Age or date-of-birth details, when shown, can help separate similar names.
- Open Virginia in VINELink and choose the offender or custody search.
- Enter the person's legal name. Add an inmate ID when the live form offers that field and the number is known.
- Review every likely match. Select only a record whose identifiers and facility fit the Powhatan County booking.
- Read the custody status and location exactly as displayed. Do not turn a transfer event into a community release.
- If nothing matches, check spelling and aliases, then contact Pamunkey Booking/Release before drawing a conclusion.
A present Pamunkey match supports current listing in that participating feed. A missing match does not prove release. The person may have been transferred to VADOC or another jail, the name may differ, or the feed may be between updates. Note: A name disappearing from VINELink is a reason to verify the custody chain, not proof that all custody has ended.
Powhatan VINE Status Fields
VINELink is most useful for current status and future alerts. It is not a permanent Powhatan County release-record archive. The live interface controls which fields appear, and not every jail supplies every optional event. Treat its entries as a report from the participating custody feed, then preserve the alert and request the underlying jail record when formal confirmation matters.

Virginia's official workflow says local-jail VINE updates stop after release. The reliable after-release pair is the notice that was received plus Pamunkey's release or transfer entry. For an older case, ask for the record instead of expecting VINELink to preserve the former result.
Register Powhatan County Release Alerts
Register only after opening the correct person. The portal may offer telephone, text, email, TTY, or an in-app notice. Available methods can change. Use the options shown by the live registration screen, enter the requested contact details, and complete each confirmation prompt. Keep the registration data and PIN private.
- Select the notification or “Get Notified” action on the matched record.
- Choose one or more contact methods offered by the live Virginia portal.
- Enter the required contact information and finish the confirmation steps.
- For a telephone notice, create a PIN. Enter it when the automated call arrives to acknowledge the alert and stop repeat calls.
- Save the notice, then verify whether the event was release, transfer, or another change with Pamunkey or the receiving agency.
Anyone may use and register with the local-jail service under the official Virginia workflow. That open local rule must not be confused with NAAVI's restricted eligibility for state-prison victim notifications. If a future notice matters and the person is still in Pamunkey custody, register before the event. VINE cannot recreate a notice that was never requested.
Note: Pamunkey does not promise a public advance-release alert, so ask the facility when timing is important and no notice has arrived.
Powhatan Transfers Switch Alert Systems
A Powhatan County custody path can cross system lines. Jail VINE follows the local or regional jail stage. When Pamunkey transfers a state-responsible person to the Virginia Department of Corrections, the public lookup changes to the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. State-prison notifications now use the separate Notification and Assistance for Victim Inclusion system, known as NAAVI.
NAAVI is limited to eligible registered crime victims and qualifying immediate family members. It can provide notices for events such as transfer, an anticipated release, a changed anticipated date, actual release, parole action, work release, death, name change, and escape or recapture. General searchers do not enroll simply because they found a person in the public locator. They use the VADOC locator and official records instead. NAAVI also does not track probationers or parolees after the state custody stage ends.
A transfer can require a new registration with the newly responsible service. A later return to a local jail can require re-registration with Jail VINE. This Powhatan-specific handoff is important because one registration does not follow a person through every Virginia custody setting. Both systems end their notifications after the covered actual release, so neither is an archive of all past Powhatan County releases.
Confirm Powhatan County Release Events
For a Pamunkey event, use the Pamunkey Regional Jail directory and call Booking/Release at 804-365-6400 extension 3043. Ask about the identified booking, not just the person in general. Supply the full name, known aliases, date of birth if known, inmate or booking number, arresting agency, and booking date. Ask whether the exit was a community release or a transfer and request the date, time, and release type. If staff cannot give an informal answer, Records at extension 3033 or a narrow Virginia FOIA request is the documentary route.
Check the Powhatan court case as well. A court order may explain bond, dismissal, time served, sentence, or revocation, yet the docket does not always prove the hour the jail completed the exit. Conversely, a jail event does not fully explain the legal result. Pairing the Pamunkey custody entry with the court order is stronger than relying on a VINE status alone.
For a state transfer, use the VADOC locator and VADOC records. A future state release date is a calculation and may change. For a sentenced federal person, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator. Federal custody does not appear in Virginia Jail VINE.
Powhatan VINELink Release Limits
VINELink has a narrow purpose. It can help identify a person in a participating custody feed and send future notices. It does not replace the Pamunkey release record, the Powhatan court case, the VADOC locator, or a federal locator. Data may lag. Names can be entered differently. A no-result can reflect a transfer, an alias, a fully ended feed, or a search mismatch.
The Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry is another separate system. It covers only people required to register for qualifying offenses. It is not a general Powhatan County release list, and its alerts do not substitute for jail-release registration. ICE also maintains its own current-custody locator. Neither ICE nor the federal Bureau of Prisons feeds VINELink.

Use the correct source for the stage in question. For a very recent Pamunkey change, VINE and Booking/Release may be fastest. For an old local event, lead with the jail record and court case. For state custody or supervision, VADOC controls. The source that physically held the person is the one that can document the exit.
