Work Center Release Outcomes

State Farm Work Center is listed by the Virginia Department of Corrections as an active state facility. Its name can cause confusion. “Work center,” “work release,” and an outside work assignment do not by themselves mean that an inmate has been discharged. The controlling fact is whether VADOC custody ended. A person can remain assigned to VADOC while working beyond a secure perimeter or while moving through a later custody stage.

A true Work Center release may lead to full discharge or to state community supervision. Probation and parole both take place in the community, but they arise from different authority. Probation is ordered by a court. Parole is conditional release for a person eligible under Virginia law. A transfer to State Farm Correctional Center, another work center, or any VADOC institution remains state custody. The live locator location and the release order distinguish those outcomes.

Verify Work Center Release

Use the Inmate and Supervisee Locator, not Pamunkey Regional Jail’s current roster. The VADOC tool accepts a name or seven-digit inmate ID and provides state location and release-date information for people within its covered custody or supervision population. It may not return a permanent public entry after a person becomes fully inactive.

1. Search by the seven-digit VADOC inmate ID when it is known.
2. If using a name, compare all identifying details before choosing a record.
3. Read the current location exactly. Another VADOC location means the state still holds custody.
4. Record the live release-date label and compare it with the sentencing order and time computation.
5. Check the supervisee side if prison custody ended under probation or parole.
6. For a fully inactive person, request the VADOC release or discharge file.

A projected date can change. Credit loss or restoration, a new sentence, a corrected jail-credit entry, an appeal, parole action, or a detainer may alter the computation or destination. For that reason, do not treat an earlier public date as proof that release occurred. Work Center Records Contact

The VADOC facility directory provides the Work Center address and phone. Use that line for current facility routing. It is not a substitute for the state’s records process when the question concerns an old discharge, the time calculation, or documents issued when custody ended.

After the person becomes inactive, VADOC’s Form 17 is the designated request form. Ask for existing records that identify the release or discharge date and type, notification-of-release letter or order, time-computation summary, and any releasable identifying photo. State the legal name, VADOC inmate ID, date of birth if known, and the Work Center connection. Ask for an estimate because Virginia FOIA allows actual reasonable costs and the research found no fixed fee for this packet. The agency generally responds within five working days under Virginia Code § 2.2-3704. Where allowed, it can provide notice of up to seven more working days. A response is not always full production; it can include a cited withholding, partial records, or a statement that the described record cannot be found.

Work Center’s State Role

State Farm Work Center is physically in Powhatan County but belongs to a statewide sentence and records system. Its inmates are not a Powhatan County jail population. This difference controls every lookup. Pamunkey Regional Jail handles many local Powhatan bookings, while VADOC handles the Work Center custody record, release computation, and state supervision transition.

No source in the research established a public capacity, annual release number, or distinct current-release feed for the Work Center. Those figures are omitted rather than guessed. The official facts are narrower: VADOC operates the active facility, publishes its location and phone, and uses the statewide locator and records process. A person’s individual order and state status matter more than assumptions drawn from the facility name.

Work Center Release Paperwork

VADOC’s facility release process provides a notification-of-release letter and calls for review or signature of the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. These are useful records when the public locator stops returning a person after full discharge. Each document answers a different question. The letter records the release event, while conditions identify continuing supervision duties.

VADOC may also prepare personal property and document envelopes as part of the state release process. That detail is limited to state facilities and should not be copied onto regional-jail releases. VADOC says facility discharge or parole release is completed by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting, and transportation may involve an approved pickup or an arranged public option. The statement is a state procedure, not a guaranteed appointment time.

The point when VADOC says the person is no longer in prison custody.

Work Center Release Computation

The Work Center does not create a separate public formula for release. VADOC generally computes active state-responsible terms longer than 12 months from the sentencing order, certified jail credit, offense date, concurrent or consecutive terms, and the credit system that applies. The location is one input in custody management, not the source of a unique release percentage.

Virginia law can allow different earned-credit rates. Some enumerated offenses are limited to 4.5 days of credit for each 30 days served, while other eligible offenses can use other statutory levels. Classification, exclusions, forfeiture, restoration, later sentences, and corrected orders can move the displayed date. The familiar “85 percent” phrase is only shorthand and should not be used to calculate one person’s Work Center discharge.

Review the official VADOC time-computation source for the state framework. Then compare the individual locator date with the most recent court and VADOC documents. A forecast is not the same as the actual event, especially when a hold changes the destination.

The VADOC facilities directory confirms that State Farm Work Center remains an active state facility and identifies the broader office system used after release.

The official directory establishes the custodian, while the locator and release papers establish what happened to the named person.

Work Center Community Supervision

Petersburg District 7 is the VADOC probation and parole office identified as serving Powhatan. It is at 6 Brasfield Parkway, Petersburg, VA 23805, and the phone is 804-524-6542. A Work Center release to a home plan in another area may be assigned elsewhere, so the locator or signed conditions should guide the contact.

Powhatan also participates in Piedmont Court Services, a separate local community-corrections layer. It can be involved with local pretrial or probation matters, while District 7 handles VADOC state supervision. Sending every released person to one generic “probation office” can produce the wrong answer. Read the court order and VADOC record to identify the supervising authority and whether supervision has reached discharge.

Note: A person can be released from prison yet remain under enforceable supervision until the agency records a final discharge.

Work Center Detainers at Release

Another lawful hold can change where a person goes when the state term ends. A detainer, new sentence, federal matter, or immigration action may lead directly to another custodian. In that case, VADOC release means release from its own custody, not necessarily a return to the community.

When an individual record names ICE, its detainee locator is a limited follow-up. ICE states that a detainer can request advance notice and up to 48 extra hours so it may take custody. No official source found a routine Work Center or Powhatan ICE arrangement, so this branch should be used only when the person’s record supports it. Record the receiving authority and confirm status there.
