Powhatan Parole and Probation
Parole and probation can both place a released person under rules in the community, yet they arise in different ways. Parole is conditional release from a state prison term for a person who is legally eligible for a Virginia Parole Board decision. Probation is supervision imposed by a court, often with part of a sentence suspended. Virginia largely ended discretionary parole for felony offenses committed on or after January 1, 1995, subject to the exceptions in Code of Virginia § 53.1-165.1. Many people leaving VADOC now reach supervision through a sentence and earned-credit framework rather than a new parole grant.
The order controls. A Powhatan Circuit Court sentencing order may place a person on probation after active time, while an eligible state prisoner may leave confinement under parole conditions. A person released on pretrial bond is not automatically on either one. The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers state-supervised probationers and parolees, but it is not a list of every person ever released through Pamunkey Regional Jail.
| Status | Source | Best verification |
|---|---|---|
| Parole | Virginia Parole Board decision followed by VADOC release | Board decision, VADOC locator, and signed conditions |
| State probation | Sentencing or revocation order | Court order and VADOC supervisee result |
| Local supervision | Local court or community-corrections order | Powhatan case record and Piedmont Court Services |
| Discharge | End of the supervision term | Discharge order, Board result, or agency record |
Verify Powhatan Post-Release Supervision
Start with a full legal name, date of birth or age, and a case or VADOC number. A name alone can match the wrong person. For a Powhatan County felony sentence, read the court record first so the active term, suspended term, and supervision language are clear. Then use the state locator to see whether VADOC reports the person as a supervisee and which district is attached. The complete Powhatan County released-inmate search path is useful when the custody destination is still unclear.
- Open the VADOC locator and select the supervisee search when post-release state supervision is expected.
- Search by the seven-digit VADOC inmate ID when known. Otherwise, use the name and compare every available identifier.
- Read the status and district shown on the matching record. A District 7 result supports state supervision serving Powhatan.
- Match that result to the Powhatan sentencing, revocation, or release order. The court record supplies the legal basis.
- If no state result appears, check whether the order names local community corrections, pretrial supervision, or Piedmont Court Services.
- For an older or inactive case, request the discharge or supervision record from the agency that held it rather than treating a blank search as proof.
Virginia Jail VINE serves a different task. It can send custody-change alerts while a person is in a participating local or regional jail, including Pamunkey. Its updates end after local-jail release, and it does not replace the VADOC supervision record. State-prison victim notifications now use NAAVI for eligible registered victims. Neither notification service should be treated as a general public probation roster.
Which Powhatan Supervision Office?
Powhatan County does not have a VADOC district office named for the county. The official VADOC facilities and offices directory assigns Powhatan to Petersburg Probation and Parole District 7, while Piedmont Court Services handles a separate local community-corrections layer. Contact District 7 only after the locator or a court document points to state supervision. Staff may need a full name and identifying number, and public access to case details can be limited by law or policy.

The official directory also names Shante M. Thweatt as district chief. That detail helps route an agency inquiry, but it does not establish who supervises a named person. District assignments can change, and only the current record should guide contact. If the VADOC result does not fit the court order, note the conflict and ask the court or district to clarify it.
The official directory is also the source for the District 7 service area shown here. Its captured office page provides a useful visual check of the state route.
The image helps distinguish the Petersburg state office from a Powhatan-named local office and from Pamunkey Regional Jail.
Powhatan Local Probation Route
Piedmont Court Services is a separate regional community-corrections layer. Powhatan’s official page describes an eight-locality body with seven probation officers and a director who supervise felony and misdemeanor cases. It may handle a local or court-directed assignment, but it is not VADOC District 7 and does not make parole decisions. No public person-by-person lookup was found.
Use the Powhatan court order to decide whether Piedmont is the right route. A bond order, pretrial term, suspended sentence, or local probation direction may name the responsible program. General District Court handles misdemeanors, preliminary felony matters, and bail within its jurisdiction. Circuit Court handles felony trials, appeals, and final felony sentencing. The statewide court case view may show the disposition, but the clerk’s final order is the sound source when the online summary is too brief.
Do not send the same broad request to every office. Ask the court for the order, Piedmont for a local assignment it administers, or VADOC for a state supervision record. That division reduces false conclusions and directs the request to the agency that created the record.
Note: A local court-services assignment is not parole, and a VADOC District 7 record does not prove a Pamunkey release time.
Powhatan Parole Decision Records
The Virginia Parole Board decides discretionary parole for the limited eligible population. Its public meetings page is an event-based route for agendas and minutes, not a fixed calendar of every interview. Since July 1, 2024, an inclined-to-grant discretionary parole or geriatric conditional-release case includes a video meeting with the offender, with an agenda posted at least three working days in advance. Eligibility means the Board may consider release. It is not a promise of release.
The monthly parole reports and decisions archive is more useful for an outcome. Reports generally appear at the end of the following month so required notices can occur. A PDF may list the DOC number, name, case type, jurisdiction, offenses, decision dates, sentence data, reasons, votes, and outcomes such as Grant, Not Grant, Continue on Parole, or Discharge. Match the DOC number, not the name alone.
The official decisions archive is shown in the research capture below.
The archive can establish the Board’s decision, while VADOC records establish the later release process and active supervision.
Note: A parole grant records approval, while the later VADOC release entry confirms when physical custody actually ended.
Powhatan Release Papers and Property
Conditions are the written rules attached to release or probation. They can address reporting, travel, treatment, contact, restitution, and compliance with court or agency directions, but the exact signed order controls. A violation is an alleged failure to follow a condition. It does not, by itself, prove that supervision was revoked or that the person returned to custody. A court or Board action is needed to establish the legal result.
For a VADOC release, the person receives a notification-of-release letter and reviews and signs the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Those documents are strong confirmation artifacts when the public locator no longer returns a fully inactive person. They can show what type of supervision began and which terms applied. VADOC also describes preparing personal property and document envelopes before a state-facility release. That process belongs to VADOC and must not be attributed to Pamunkey Regional Jail.
The VADOC facility-release information explains this document review and release preparation. When a signed order and a locator entry differ, preserve both dates and seek clarification. A planned release date, Board grant date, actual prison departure, and supervision start can be separate events.
Note: Signed release conditions can confirm the legal status even when a fully discharged person no longer appears in the public VADOC locator.
Powhatan Probation Violations and Warrants
An absconder is a person alleged to have stopped reporting or whose location is unknown to the supervising agency. The label does not cancel the fact that an earlier release occurred. Nor does it prove a current arrest warrant without a matching agency or court record. Research found no official public Powhatan Sheriff absconder or warrant list, so old notices and third-party pages should not be used as a current status source.
Check the issuing court for a capias, revocation filing, or later order. A capias is a court command to take a person into custody. Ask VADOC District 7 about a state-supervision record when that office is shown, and use the Board’s reports if parole was the legal status. If a new custody event appears, confirm it through the facility that now holds the person. A violation filing, hearing date, warrant, and return to custody are different events.
Powhatan Release Terms Defined
Official records often use short labels. These definitions help keep a lookup tied to the right stage, but the order and agency record remain controlling.
- Parole
- Conditional community release from a parole-eligible prison term after a Board decision.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision, often linked to a suspended part of a sentence.
- Supervisee
- A person whom VADOC reports as being under Community Corrections supervision.
- Absconder
- A person alleged to have stopped complying or whose location is unknown to supervision.
- Discharge
- The formal end of parole, probation, or another supervision term.
A “Grant” in a monthly Board report means parole was approved subject to the remaining release process. “Continue on Parole” means the status remains in place. “Discharge” means the Board or supervising authority ended the applicable supervision. None of those terms should be substituted for the exact physical release entry held by VADOC or the jail.
Confirm Powhatan Supervision Discharge
Supervision ends through a formal discharge, expiration, court action, or other authorized disposition. Do not infer discharge from a missing web result. The VADOC locator covers people in custody or supervision, so a fully inactive person may fall outside its live scope. For an older state record, request the release or discharge material from VADOC. For court probation, obtain the final order or clerk record. For parole, check the monthly Board report and the VADOC record together.
A sound conclusion names both the source and its limit: the court ended probation, the Board reported discharge, or VADOC documented the supervision end. If the source only shows that a person is absent, report no more than that. The same caution applies to Pamunkey’s current roster. Leaving a roster, leaving prison, starting supervision, and finishing supervision are separate points in the custody chain.
Virginia law does not make one public portal a permanent archive of every completed Powhatan County supervision case. Narrow requests work best. Include the legal name, identifying number, court case, and an estimated date range, then ask for an existing discharge record instead of asking an agency to create a new report.
